ocean jasper towers (orbicular chalcedony)

ocean jasper, also called oj, isn’t actually a jasper, but a variety of quartz called chalcedony. dr. werner lieber has done the most research on ocean jasper & determined it to be spherulitic or orbicular chalcedony. in geology a spherulite is a spherical body created by radial growth around a central point. like bullseyes or spokes on a wheel. this is what we see in the super unique patterning in ocean jasper.

some oj, like this specimen, contain druses of clear quartz in the form of tiny crystals known as “druzy.” it’s found in only one place in the world in northwestern madagascar. it’s actually 2 deposits about 10 miles apart. the first vein was mined from 1999-2006, & there have been 8 total veins found now, each a bit different. the history is rather mysterious, though, with the first mention of chalcedony in the area being mentioned by a french mineralogist as early as 1922, but not orbicular specifically. despite being called ocean jasper it’s generally not found on the beach, although the original specimens were found along the shore. the mines themselves are approximately 330 feet & 1.5 miles inland.
