meet the rather rare, pink snowflake obsidian, also called red snowflake obsidian or himalayan pink snowflake obsidian.

obsidian is a naturally occurring volcanic glass formed in very quickly cooled lava that contains high amounts of silica. it’s really not considered a true mineral because it doesn’t have a consistent chemical structure & it cools too quickly to form true crystals. just the same, obsidian has been used in tool & weapon making since ancient civilization, as well as adored for its healing properties, being used as a protective amulet.

snowflake obsidian, however, does have some tiny crystals trapped in it! the usually white or grayish spots in snowflake obsidian are created when the lava contains small amounts of water containing other trace minerals. as the lava cools, these trapped water molecules escape, forming bubbles. these bubbles then solidify into cristobalite crystals (a type of quartz).

red/pink snowflake obsidian happens when there’s iron and/or hematite in the cristobalite formation within the obsidian. pretty cool, right?!
